With the Instagram account “Hot Dudes Reading” trending with over 312k followers (as of the writing of this article), the reading community is getting strange, voyeuristic attention from the Internet! The account simply aggregates pictures of men reading actual books (no kindles) on the subway lines of New York City.

But why has this become such a popular Instagram account?

The answer lies in questions: No matter your gender, how many times have you been on a bus or a subway, trying to get a peek at the cover of someone else’s book? How frequently do you start conversations with friendly bibliophiles based on the book in their hand? How proud do you feel when you read in public? The love of reading can be a solitary task, but reading in public brings our passion for books closer to world around us. Plus, it’s a great way to make new friends and learn something new!

Not all of us live in a metropolis or regularly use public transportation but we do find places to read: the DMV, the doctor’s office, at a café, in our cars on our lunch break. Where is your favorite place to read?

Although we don’t condone taking pictures of people without their knowledge, SEND US A SELFIE on Facebook (we know you wanna’) of your best on-the-go reading, no matter your gender!

Be safe, be responsible, but be reading! Where is your favorite Reader’s Nook?
