TEDTalk: The Power of Introverts

Are you an introvert? Have you ever felt like it was insane that the world couldn’t just accept you as you are? Have you ever felt like it was impossible for you to fit in, because all anybody wants is extroverts?

Extroversion is highly valued in the business world, in sports, in the classroom—pretty much everywhere. And that’s why this TED Talk is so important. Because the perspective everyone else seems to hold needs to change.

As a girl, writer Susan Cain remembers feeling like an outcast when she wanted alone time to read at summer camp. For her, reading was a fun thing to do with family and friends, but people at camp didn’t see it as a group activity. She was encouraged to be outgoing and not to read her books, which she found to be a disheartening and incomprehensible experience.

But she always felt down deep that there was something a little bit odd about trying to be an extrovert. It just didn’t quite make sense to her.

It wasn’t until years later that Cain identified herself as an introvert and began advocating on behalf of introverts everywhere in her book “QUIET: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can’t Stop Talking.”

Watch her passionate TEDTalk to learn more about introverts’ untapped power, and how it ought to be harnessed.
